Since 1969, when
the first meteorite was discovered
in Antartica by a Japanese expedition, many scientific
expeditions have been sent to Antartica in search of
meteorites. Many thousands of meteorites have been
discovered in Antartica because of its unique geology
and ice formations which deposit meteorites along the
mountain ranges. Half of the twelve known Mars
meteorites came from Antartica. ALH84001 which
fell 13,000 years ago, was discovered in 1984 in the
Allan Hills region of Antartica.
